It’s called a Mind Machine in the sense that it helps change the Frequency of the brain, say from Beta to Alpha used for example if you wanted to meditate in the middle of the day when you have an hour or so.
This Graph show Alpha is slower than Beta.
The Brainstem senses vibration on the skin or as airwaves for hearing (it also maintains consciousness and regulates sleep).
As sound enters the ears the brainstem produces a response as a result of sound tones it senses. This response originates in the Olivary Bodies (the Olives appear as a bulge located in the Lower part of the Brainstem. Binaural Beats are the response and are an occurence in the brainstem, caused by a specific physical stimuli (such as certain sound tones in headphones).
The Olives detect frequency, amplitude, and the direction of sound relative to each ear.

The ears receive the tones and this rhythm of sound is directed to the olives which detect and separate the stimulus as raw data then this is sent to the thalamus which acts as a relay station and then the temporal lobe which tries to make sense out of it all.
We can add sound files which contain these special tones that play in our MP3 players created by the NP3. The brain has an ability to synchronize its speed (brainwave frequency) to these tones. The pulsing of the tones acts the auditory stimuli the brain uses to trigger the Frequency Following Response (FFR).
So During the Day When things are busy and Stressful you take time to Meditate by focusing on the sounds in the headphones and slow your waves down from Beta to Alpha for 20 minutes to an hour.
This Frequency Following Response FFR of the brain can be useful because brainwaves are very much related to mental state. For Example a 4 HZ brainwave is associated with sleep, so a 4 HZ sound pattern would help produce the sleep state in your brain. The same concept can be applied to other mental states, including concentration and higher focus.
An EEG is designed to record cerebral activity but other activity is picked up also such as that from the brainstem and is then so termed an artifact. When the internal rhythms of the brain are synchronized to resonate with the tones in the headphone then brainwave entrainment takes place.
Entrainment is a principle of physics, it’s a synchronization of two or more rhythmic cycles. The principles of entrainment appear in chemistry, neurology, biology, and more.
There are typical ranges of frequencies that one tries to create a binaural beat in. One range maybe for increased memory another range may be for learning new information another may be for the body to heal itself.
These ranges have names such as Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Theta.
As your mind begins to focus on the sound in the Headphones it locks onto a tone and enters into a Binaural Beat stage. At the point a binaural beat is created in our brain, our mind then has entered a new state.
